It is never appropriate to release a pet to the wild. However, you may feel uncertain about how to find a new home for your pet. Here are some resources in New Mexico that can help you re-home your pet.

If you have a pet bird check with:

Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of New Mexico is a licensed non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of all species of companion parrots.

High Desert Bird Club of New Mexico is a membership organization that has a robust bird rescue program.

Birds of a Feather Parrot Rescue of New Mexico is a private rescue for pet birds of all species that specializes in helping people re-home their pet birds

For reptiles and amphibians that need new homes contact:

New Mexico Reptile/Amphibian Rescue provides an opportunity for pet owners to list their pets for adoption

The New Mexico Herpetological Society (NMHS) at the University of New Mexico is concerned about all types of reptiles. They can be a resource to check with if you have a reptile that needs a new home.

Most of New Mexico’s independent pet stores are part of the Don’t Let It Loose community. If you have a pet that needs a new home your first place to check is with one of these fine stores.
