Promoting Responsible Pet Ownership

If you're faced with rehoming your pet, use these resources to help you find the solution that works best for you. And don't forget to reach out to others in the community to find someone who would happily care for your pet. Retirement communities, schools, daycares and local shelters are all options.

Illinois invasive species info

Aquatic Invaders in the Marketplace (Take AIM) was developed by Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant and Illinois Natural History Survey to offer resources to water gardeners, aquarists, retailers, anglers, teachers, and wholesalers to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. CLICK HERE to learn how invasions happen, how to identify invasive species, and how to chose non-invaders for your garden or aquarium.

If you are no longer able to care for your pets or plants, Take AIM offers alternatives to release via their Illinois rehoming network.

Be A Hero – Release Zero is Illinois’ statewide outreach campaign to prevent new introductions of aquatic invaders. It provides resources for consumers, retailers and outreach professionals.
